Chief Montour gives opening remarks at the Taxation Meeting

Bringing Six Nations Together to Defend Against Taxation

09/25/13 A Community Meeting to discuss taxation was held on September 25 in the Six Nations Polytechnic Grand River Room.

A crowd of approximately 100 people attended the meeting where they could speak about their taxation concerns and share solutions that are beneficial. Community members and Chief Montour were asked by Council to develop a strategy to defend Six Nations against taxation.

During the meeting, a variety of opinions were expressed about imposed taxation. More meetings based on this issue could include a community-driven commission dedicated to address any type of taxation on Six Nations.

Chief Montour liked the commission idea. In closing remarks, he noted that this meeting produced momentum. He would like to keep that momentum and wanted to hold a further meeting. He also noted that a strategy should be developed over several meetings.
