Community Engagement begins to measure support for Green Energy Project
|
|
03/05/12 – The Economic Development department of the Six Nations Elected Council (SNEC) opened a community engagement process to measure the level of support for the Samsung Renewable Energy project.
At the March 5 meeting, approximately 60 people attended. This included community members, SNEC Councillors and council staff. They heard details of a proposed accommodation to see Six Nations benefit from the Haldimand Tract through a Samsung wind and solar energy project in South Cayuga.
Options put forth saw a combination of equity and royalty options that could potentially see Six Nations accommodated with up to $55 million over a 20-year period.
However, after the presentation, a variety of comments from those in attendance did question the concept of Green Energy and the impacts of Green Energy structures on the environment and human well being.
One person spoke about the validity of long term Green Energy investments and the short time period for community members to examine aspects of the proposal. One community member pointed out that traditional hunting and fishing rights under the Nanfan Treaty would be impacted when wildlife move away from the South Cayuga area.
The March 5 meeting was a starting point in informing the community. Support needs to be gauged to a stronger level of acceptance from Six Nations community members.
This meeting was the beginning of a 30-day consultation period that includes focus group and other meetings to gauge support for the Samsung initiative. The meeting schedule concludes with a final community meeting on April 3. At this meeting, an announcement will be made on what direction will be taken on this proposal.
