First steps toward a new Six Nations Fire Hall #1

Saying Goodbye to SN Fire Hall #1

02/11/14 – Six Nations Elected Council started to say good-bye to a historic institution on Monday February 10, 2014. It was time to demolish the mould riddled Fire Station #1.

The station has been around since the 1960’s and was the main home for the SN Fire Department. Six Nations firefighters continue to contribute fire protection services among other duties.

Fire Chief Mike Seth comments on the historical significance of seeing Fire Hall #1 being excavated, "Seeing this building being demolished is bitter sweet. Knowing this history of the department and personnel that goes with it is important to remember the past and now we can embrace the future."

The station also played host to upwards of over 300 Community Events ranging from BBQ’s on Community Awareness Week. During the events, firefighters gave station tours for Six Nations school children.

Last summer, the fire hall was closed due to a mould hazard and preparations were made to ensure a clean, safe, excavation of the building.

Demolition is firmly underway. The new Six Nations fire hall will be built in the general vicinity of the old fire station #1.

Fire Chief Seth also comments on the future of the SN Fire Department, "This will be a new era for the Fire Department to work in a new state-of-the-art facility that will hopefully house more trucks and storage for all the equipment."

When the grand opening arrives, there will be ribbons to cut and speeches to hear. Community members will enjoy the celebration of what hopes to be a promising future for Six Nations’ Fire Protection Services.
