Wrap Up Community Engagement Meeting for Green Energy Project
|
|
04/04/12 – A crowd of about 140 people attended an April 3 community meeting hosted by the Six Nations Economic Development Department. They came to hear the findings gathered over a 30 day community engagement process on the Green Renewable Energy Park, a Samsung project.
Economic Development Director Matt Jamieson took those in attendance through a power point presentation outlining the proposed royalty or equity based options available through this project. He pointed out that this is the first project of its kind to accommodate Six Nations Ancestral/Territorial lands under perpetual care and maintenance. Other businesses are interested in working with Six Nations under a similar capacity.
Next, Community Planner Amy Lickers presented some of the findings of the Community Engagement Process. She highlighted some of the comments and themes and noted that qualitative data is the key to gauging the level of support for this project.
A few independent experts in the field of green energy and environmental sciences made brief presentations about the need for further information on environmental impacts.
Once these presentations were completed, community members shared a variety of opinions. Some voiced support and some were opposed to the project. Some people noted that Six Nations must be in a position to make some type of revenue stream. Federal government cost cutting is making it difficult to predict the state of Six Nations in the near or distant future.
A decision of acceptance or non-acceptance will be announced this month.
