The Tom Longboat Run 2014 gets underway!

A Day to Remember A Legendary Six Nations Athlete

06/04/13 - When it comes to sporting heroes, many of today’s generation might focus on hockey and lacrosse. One of the finest athletes from Six Nations of the Grand River is the legendary champion long distant runner, Tom Longboat.

Proclaimed a yearly event by the Ontario legislature, the Tom Longboat run is a celebration of this athlete’s successes and a promotion of healthy exercise. The event is produced in collaboration with Parks and Recreation and Six Nations Health Services. The Communications Department provided advertising design and promotion.

Those who participated received free T-Shirts, Certificates, and the chance to win raffle prizes (i.e. Bikes, etc.,).

A testament to his long distance running ability, Tom Longboat raced a horse and carriage from Hagersville to Caledonia. History shows he beat the horse.

On April 15, 2010, MPP Mike Colle put forward a motion to recognize one of the fastest runners by declaring June 4 as Tom Longboat Day. All parties in the Ontario legislature supported the motion.
