Dream of a New Six Nations Water Plant: Construction Underway
|
|
03/22/12 – On April 16, 2010 Six Nations took steps to a new future when the site of the new Six Nations Water Plant was unveiled at an official ground breaking ceremony.
It has been a long arduous journey since that day as construction was previously underway but was stopped due to federal funding delays and regulations.
To ensure that water will be constructed Council then secured a $15 million loan from the Royal Bank. This opened the door to move on contracts for the plant on Johnson Road.
Once funding was no longer an issue, an official contract was signed on September 28, 2011 with Maple Reinders Construction. In the past, the firm worked on three other Six Nations projects.
The new Six Nations Water Plant has been under construction since October of 2011, as Project Manager Mike Murray took those in attendance through a timeline of dates on the plant’s construction.
Current Water Plant Manager Steve Lickers, gave an overview of the current plant and offered pictures of how the water process works noting it is not uncommon for him or his staff to work between 70-100 hours per work to ensure drinking water for the territory.
Once the presentations concluded, community members learned about the construction process and technical experts further explained water plant details that were hung up on the Community Hall Walls. Other construction stages must be met before the plant can be fully functional noting that the construction of the Plant itself is just phase 1.
More updates will follow as the plant becomes closer to a reality and the dream of clean safe drinking water is realized.
